The Age of Logic and Mathematics
The 17th and 18th centuries saw intellectual advances that began to make “mechanical thinking” conceivable.
René Descartes (1600s): Proposed that animals were like machines, fueling debates about the difference between natural and artificial intelligence.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716): Developed binary arithmetic, the foundation of digital computing, and dreamed of a “universal calculus” — a system where all human reasoning could be reduced to symbols.
George Boole (1815–1864): Created Boolean algebra, a logical system using true/false values. His work became crucial for computer circuits and programming.
Charles Babbage & Ada Lovelace (1800s): Babbage designed the Analytical Engine, a mechanical general-purpose computer. Ada Lovelace, often called the first programmer, envisioned that such a machine could go beyond numbers to manipulate symbols — a visionary step toward AI.
These thinkers didn’t build AI, but they built the intellectual scaffolding that made it possible.
Early 20th Century: Machines Meet Logic
The 20th century marked the transition from abstract theories to practical machines.
Alan Turing (1912–1954): A central figure in AI’s history, Turing formalized the concept of a “universal machine” capable of simulating any process of reasoning. His famous paper, Computing Machinery and Intelligence (1950), introduced the question: “Can machines think?” and proposed the Turing Test as a way to measure machine intelligence.
Claude Shannon (1916–2001): Known as the father of information theory, Shannon showed how Boolean logic could be applied to electrical circuits. This made computers capable of decision-making processes.
During World War II, Turing and others also applied early computers to codebreaking, demonstrating that machines could handle complex reasoning tasks.
The Dawn of Computers
By the 1940s and 1950s, the invention of digital computers created the practical foundation for AI.
ENIAC (1945): One of the first electronic general-purpose computers, ENIAC could perform massive calculations much faster than humans.
Stored-Program Computers: The idea that computers could store instructions (programs) in memory allowed machines to be flexible rather than hardwired for single tasks.
Early Neural Networks: In 1943, Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts published a paper describing artificial neurons — a simplified model of how biological neurons work. This was the first mathematical description of a neural network.
Computing power was still primitive, but researchers began to believe that machines might eventually replicate human thought.
The Birth of AI: The Dartmouth Conference (1956)
The official birth of Artificial Intelligence as a field came in the summer of 1956, when John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Allen Newell, Herbert Simon, and others organized the famous Dartmouth Conference.
The proposal for the conference stated:
“Every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it.”
This bold statement marked a turning point. For the first time, AI was defined as a dedicated scientific field, not just a dream. Researchers at Dartmouth believed that within a few decades, machines might rival human intelligence.
